Prophecy for NC? Yemen could become first nation to run out of water
Yemen terror stories are topping news reels again today, reinforcing the significance of the linked October article from the New York Times. While we in NC and the southeast are nowhere near the water crisis in Yemen, we are already in the midst of water wars. Tom Campbell recently wrote a story for NCSPIN outlining our current water battle with SC.
He notes our decaying infrastructure, limited supply, & explosive growth (despite recession). These challenges require new infrastructure and it is our responsibility as future LA’s to position ourselves to meet them. Most perceive these solutions to be the business of civil engineers. But if LA’s take a secondary role in their design, we will miss an opportunity to bring human experience and quality-of-life considerations to the forefront of emerging water infrastructure.
Yemen is set to be the first country in the world to run out of water, providing a taste of the conflict and mass movement of populations that may spread across the world if population growth outstrips natural resources.
