Lunch & Learn: Tension Structures July 30

Lori Benshoff with Carolina SKYShades, LLC will be providing a lunch and learn onFriday July 30, 2010 at the from Noon until 2:00 pm. Lunch will begin at 11:30 and Lori will begin her presentation at 12:00.  The presentation is roughly 45-60 minutes. The course is titled “Architectural Tension Membrane Structures” and is approvedfor 1 credit hour with NCBOLA.  The approved course number is 7144.

Program Overview:

The program provides the basics of membrane structures. The program explains the nature of this type of construction versus typical conventional building, teaches the basics properties and considerations of the fabric materials whether they be for shade or waterproof applications.



Learning Objectives:

1.    Teach the differences between the dynamic nature of tensile membrane structures versus the static nature of most other types of construction.

2.    Explains the properties of what is being termed in the industry as the fifth building element, which are the fabrics, the three primary materials being Shade Cloth, Waterproof PVC and Non Combustible PTFE (Teflon).

3.    Explains the anticlastic nature of the tensile structures, regarding double curvature and its benefit of adding architectural sweeping forms and lightweight construction.
