Description: The Town of Butner is seeking a summer intern to assist the Planning/Parks and Recreation Director primarily in areas of planning and zoning especially related to code enforcement and zoning permits, implementation of new stormwater regulations including amendments to ordinances, and parks and recreation work related to planning for a new recreation facility as well as grant applications.
Job Duties: Assist with essential planning duties such as site plan review, zoning, development permitting, stormwater mitigation and public participation. More specifically assisting with inspections, reviews, writing letters for public notification and notices of violation as well as preparing agendas, staff reports, writing minutes and issuing permits.
Assist in implementing the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Phase II Stormwater Permit and the Falls Lake rules for existing and new development.
Learning how to use and organize new database software to best track permits and inspections including assisting in entering historical data.
Research parks and recreation facilities and their fees and rules for a new facility under construction for Butner.
Research grant opportunities, assist in grant writing and preparation.
Other duties as assigned.
Personal Development: Gain substantial knowledge into the all aspects of the administration of local government planning department.
Understand basic concepts of land use planning and stormwater mitigation from a local government perspective.
Develop organizational and time management skills.
Attend various meetings related to local government planning including the Kerr-Tar Rural Transportation Organization, Granville Greenways Technical Committee, Butner Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, Town Council meetings, and Board of Adjustment meetings.
Opportunities to work with the Town Manager, Finance Director and Public Works Director to see how the other departments and manager function in local government.
Qualifications: Prospective applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate level program related to Regional Planning, Public Administration, Landscape Architecture, or similar studies. No experience is required, but having a basic background in planning practices is desirable.
Work Schedule and Compensation: The work schedule can be flexible to accommodate the student’s coursework. Typical work hours would be Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. Attendance of some night meetings is encouraged. Full time work for 8-10 weeks starting in June is preferred and there is a possibility of the position becoming part time in the fall. The intern will be paid $12/hour.
